...power of art to save lives...
"Invisible
Voices" project was created to empower children of impoverished
communities with opportunities to espress themselves through the lense
of a camera, thereby giving their stories a VOICE to the outside world
as well as support through the sales of their images. "Invisible
Voices" project partnered with DEFESCO (Development of Free Education
Services Centers for Orphans) in Mwanza, Tanzania to give kids an
opportunity to capture their world one photo at a time. The
children were given "assignments," such as photographing from the eye
level of a child, different emotions in people's expressions, objects
that describe themselves, and photographing from the perspective of a
scientist who examines everything in close detail. The children
viewed the photos they took and pointed out their favorite ones.
I was very impressed with their skill level with the camera as well as
the composition of their images. But I was most impressed with
their ability to portray the aspects of their everyday life (chicken,
market, friends, feet, playing, etc.) in such a simple way. In
our western culture, it is very easy to miss the beauty and the
uniqueness of the small things. I hope to raise enough funds for
each of the kids to have a printed photobook of their own photos from
this summer as well as further educational opportunities through
DEFENSCO. Thank you for your support! For more information: www.miriamwalls.com invisiblevoicesproject.blogspot.com
